The Artist

When we let go of who we think we are is when we are truly free - Claire-Erica

From the Artist

I have an incredible love for nature, all things natural. Growing up in South Africa has given me an appreciation for all things wild. There is an incredible amount of diversity of wild life in South Africa. Coming to New Zealand with my then husband I fell in love with the vast array of ferns and New Zealand birds.
Painting and drawing from a very early age my mother nurtured that with suppling me with pastels and watercolours. A painter in her own right we painted together.
Having a creative family is always good to have around. My father a photographer, my mother a hairdresser and potter, my sister is an artist in her own right, it is no surprise I love the creative side of life. Musically minded and a wide range of visual arts endeavours through the whole family.
I am happiest when I paint what comes, from somewhere deep inside. My work is changing a little bit with each painting. I am growing and developing my techniques every step of the way. There is obsessive amount of study behind each painting for realist paintings.

I am so inspired by the art masters. No one walks up to a Rembrandt and declares ‘my toddler could have painted that!’ Its ability to inspire awe is universal. Beyond any symbolism or thematic undertones, realistic paintings can appeal and inspire an audience without requiring the artist to stand nearby to explain their influences. Part of the wonder of Rembrandt is knowing ‘not just anyone can do that’

There have been some massive changes in my life recently and with this a decision of what kind of life I really want and then to say no to everything that isn’t that. It’s so important to be intentional in our choices everyday.

"Growing up with my father as a British photographer, my mother as a hairdresser, potter and painter and my sister, an accomplished artist in her own right has been incredible, they are a lot of my inspiration" - Claire-Erica

Her first love has always been the humble stick of graphite as she took to pencil drawing as a young child. She has been drawing with graphite since, the love affair never ends.
